Interesting story. This reminds us, once again, that the purpose of airport security is mostly to create a feeling of security among passengers and not to protect us from terrorists. If the box doesn't look threatening to the other passengers, you can bring it on. If it does look threatening, you can't bring it on. When they turn you down, people see that and they feel more secure, so it is working.

The feeling of security is important, so I think their work is worthwhile. It's funny to hear people complain about flaws in airport security. Believe me, airport security could do a lot better and you would totally hate it -- the long lines would be just the beginning. There is a trade-off between convenience and safety and I definitely want convenience. I'm not sure that safety from terrorists is even possible.
