All my stuff is rather old, at least back to 2000.

What era? :) It might be quite a bonus not to have to mess with MoBo
install. What would you take for one or two of the newer ones?
I haven't heard back yet on form factor or what software/OS he plans to
install, so I probably should make certain that the hardware is
supported. Hopefully he'll get back to me soon.
Thanks Stephen!
Any opinions out there on his plan vs. a router w/ security and firewall
that's been given top ratings by consumer reports or cNet or similar?

My brother-in-law wants to setup a firmware for the folks... I don't
know why when they buy a router they can't just buy a decent one with
a well reviewed firewall installed. Instead it means a headless
system running all the time that they wouldn't have the least clue
how to troubleshoot if problems arose. They're in Springfield, he's
in STL and we're in Columbia. This seems a very foolish decision
especially considering how often cable and DSL give trouble. One
more device to troubleshoot when things go wrong
I'm not certain of the form-factor of the Mobo he has. Hopefully
he'll respond to that question soon.
I've got several old computers in my basement, which I would be
willing to part with, and you are welcome to their case and
powersupply. But I simply don't know how useful they would be to you.
