I agree with Rick, everyone should be required to fulfill some time of service when they reach 18.
Additionally, I don't give a rats behind how many congressman's kids serve or do not serve. This is supposed to be some kind of indication as to whether a congressman or President is justified to call on our military service to fight in a war?
The last time I looked, it was an all volunteer military. Additionally, the age of consent, and the age to join the military is 18. So each and every person that serves in the military ELECTED to be there, yes, even Cindy Sheehan's. Are we now trying to say that before anyone can vote for a war or against a war, they have to have siblings in the army?
Then why not go a step further and say that the only people who can judge a murderer are people who have committed murder before. Or how about saying that you cannot vote to raise taxes for school programs unless you have kids in school.
The anti-war nutjob crowd has to cling on to something and this idiotic notion of equality is just stupid. There is no equality in this country and no matter how much lip-service these wackos want to pay to the notion, they don't want equality either.
I would challenge anyone who thinks that Cindy Sheehan's statements are true, to consider giving half of their salary to someone who has no money. Go ahead, you are so into equality, take that first step forward and become equal with the person that has nothing, when you do that, then you can be in a position to dicate what others should do with their life.

I counter your proposal with one that simply states that *everyone* is
required to do a tour of duty Isreali-style. Would that be an
improvement over the current voluntary system? Or are you proposing that
only select groups of children be targeted (in your case, politicians)?

Society has always seemed to demand a little more from human beings than
it will get in practice.
