They used to be charging $599 for the 8 GB version, but now they're at a
more realistic $399 for the thing:

They also have a new "iPod Touch" for $299 that's basically an iPhone
without the phone. To be honest, that's pretty cool as well because it's
basically a portable wireless web device that plays music and lets you
share photos. Obviously, the thinking here is that if people will pay
$299 for that, they would leap to pay $100 more for something that's a
cell phone as well...and then they've got you hooked on a monthly
contract.
Another thing is that some people might not want to buy the iPhone now
because they can't break their current contract. So they can buy the iPod
Touch and sell it next year to buy the latest iPhone.
Naturally, everybody who paid $599 for an iPhone in the past two months
is going to be really, really annoyed.
I have no pity for them! Anyone living on the bleeding edge has to know
that it is expensive and risky and every purchase is a *really* lousy
investment.
On the other hand, anybody who wants to buy a smart phone has got to be
liking this, because now you can expect price cuts on everything else on
the market.
Definitely! I love seeing competition and rapid advancement in
technology. Nothing is making me want to dump my old Treo 600 quite yet,
but when I finally do it, it will be an amazing step forward.
