I guess it takes the sting out of term limits if you can get the
equivalent of an earned doctorate during your eight years under the
Capitol dome.
Good one. I would prefer a law that said "A public college or university
shall not reject an applicant for a faculty position based solely on the
lack of a graduate degree." That is, with no special provision about
years in the General Assembly and no requirement that they have an
undergraduate degree. I think the judgment should be based on the quality
of work predicted from that individual compared with what might be
supplied by other applicants and that prediction should be based on many
factors, including education, publication history and work experience.
Someone who dropped out of high school might be the best possible
applicant for some faculty jobs (e.g., after 40 years as a novelist or
businessman). I don't think anyone will make it in science or math today
without the doctoral degree, but I say let them try!
Examples: Did Ramanujan have a PhD? I don't think he finished. Did
Nelson Mandela get a law degree or graduate degree? I think he dropped
out of law school.
