My Audiovox 6600 does exactly that. It will respond to the touch of
anything, pocket sides, stylus, felt tip pens, cat paws, rocks, and
keys.
With the Treo, it would be like that except that I slip it into a cover.
Now that might be what the iPhone is trying to avoid - a slip cover. I
guess you can just put the iPhone into your pocket as is and the glass
won't scratch on your coins and pens. I do see the advantage of that!
