Another feature of the iPhone that was tricky to deal with: It doesn't respond unless you are touching it with the fleshy part of your finger. I'm not sure how that works but it doesn't respond to a fingernail or stylus. Women with long fingernails won't be able to use it easily.

The same issue with gloves. This is because the technology they use depends on the fact that there is a surprisingly large potential difference between your skin and most of the surrounding environment, so you can get a measurable signal when you touch a correctly designed device. But fingernails and gloves and such tend to be effective insulators, which is why this won't work. I'm guessing you could (and somebody will) develop an "electric" stylus that could be used with this kind of screen.

That makes sense. Wouldn't a metal stylus work? If it conducts electricity well, wouldn't it have the same potential as the fingers it is touching?

The stylus would be good for precision, but it wouldn't allow for Apple's outstanding new multitouch feature.

I guess Apple's new touch design implies that multitouch doesn't work with old-fashioned touch screens like the one on my Treo.
