A friend of mine at work told me that he read that Apple is paid by Google
for every use of the little Google search window in Safari. He said that
they are currently getting about $50 million per year and that's with 5%
of the browser market. So that means that every 1% of the browser market
is worth about $10 million per year just from Google. No wonder they want
to produce a Windows version!
The same guy told me that Dell is paid a lot by Microsoft for including
Windows on their computers and this is mostly because of advertising
revenue (same as for Google I guess). He suspects that the payments are
enough to more than compensate for the cost of putting the Microsoft OS on
the computers. In other words, he thinks that Microsoft loses a little
bit of money to Dell for every Windows PC they ship. I hadn't thought of
that before.
