So I just noticed that 32GB SSDs are now down to about $400, which is
almost down to $12 per GB, compared to maybe $1 per GB for an ordinary
notebook HD. Somebody also just announced a 256GB SSD, but I don't know
the price. Based on the price of 2 GB units, the 32 GB units could fall
in price by 30% or more pretty quickly, but it could presumably take
another year or three before they dominate standard HDs in notebook
situations (being both cheaper and better).
Interesting. Not many years ago you would have been delighted to pay $400
for a 32GB HDD and it would have seemed enormous. Times have changed.
So now the big issue is failure/error rates for the SSD. It might be
better than standard magnetic HDD for all I know, but I don't really know
and I'm going to wait until everyone who knows anything about it is saying
that the SSD is very safe and reliable. I'm just mentioning this because
there must be a lot of people who feel the same as I do and who will
therefore hesitate to buy an SSD.
