I accidentally discovered something useful. In Firefox, at least on
Windows, if you are looking at files on your computer, say file:///c:/ ,
then you can drag the icon to the taskbar and make a bookmark link that
has some special properties. Try it. When you click on the button, it
doesn't just go to that directory listing, it opens a branching menu.
That is pretty useful for me. You can still right click to open the
directory listing in the web browser.
Looking for more info about this, I happened across this page:
http://lifehacker.com/software/how-to/use-firefox-as-a-windows-file-manager-264332.php
I installed the IEtab extension and it seems to have some value. It isn't
as cool as I hoped it would be (e.g., right click is the same as in
Windows file manager and doesn't allow special tricks like "open in new
tab").
Mike
