My guess is that it is more frequent in large companies. There, often, the manager of the managers is also an *******, and the upper management will try to pick lower management who are in the same mold as themselves.

Good points Stephen,
I would also have to assume this is most likely to happen in larger companies. Where there are numerous supervisors and many more employees. That seems to me to be the only environment where those kinds of things could happen without someone higher up not seeing that the manager is an asshole.

From your description, that boss doesn't sound like an ******, not at
all. He sounds simply like a hard boss. It looks like he has high
expectations, but makes his expectations very clear. While he
    might not
be pleasant to work for, he does sound like he might even be very
effective as a boss. Being a boss is not a popularity contest, but
about getting your employees to work effectively.

What really stinks are those slimeballs who don't communicate their
expectations, and then when you screw up (or rather when they perceive
that you screw up, or even when they fabricate that you screw up),
instead of approaching you and helping you to correct the problem,
    they
talk about you behind your back, and then fire you out of the
    blue. My
guess is that this is the situation that Jennifer is describing.

That kind of boss is not only a jerk, but actually is a great
    detriment
to the business. In particular, if you have been a hard working and
dedicated employee, and then get treated this way, the loss of morale
affects everyone, not just the person being fired. Basically people
learn that the way to get ahead in that business is to be a yes-man
rather than to do the good job quietly and effectively. Soon all the
best people will either have been fired or will have left of their
    own
accord, and shortly after that the business goes down the tubes.
