I would also have to assume this is most likely to happen in larger companies. Where there are numerous supervisors and many more employees. That seems to me to be the only environment where those kinds of things could happen without someone higher up not seeing that the manager is an asshole.

That kind of boss is not only a jerk, but actually is a great detriment
to the business.  In particular, if you have been a hard working and
dedicated employee, and then get treated this way, the loss of morale
affects everyone, not just the person being fired.  Basically people
learn that the way to get ahead in that business is to be a yes-man
rather than to do the good job quietly and effectively.  Soon all the
best people will either have been fired or will have left of their own
accord, and shortly after that the business goes down the tubes.
