We have a culture in which it is considered acceptable to be a rotten and corrupt boss. Somehow we need to make this behavior unacceptable, in much the same way as we have made being racist or sexist socially unacceptable. As well as the huge human cost that rotten bosses cause, they cannot help the businesses they work for either.

It's a bit tricky because the employee is the one who sees the bad behavior, but people higher up don't know about it. It is hard for an employee to do something about it because the boss is in charge and is a difficult person do deal with.

If more companies did exit interviews and took them very seriously, that would probably help a lot.

But the company has to distinguish between a genuinely rotten boss, and a boss who just happens to play hardball, or an employee who has genuine grievances as opposed to a difficult employee.
