That sounds like the old 809 scam, but I thought that one had gone away.
It is very odd that they asked him to call when email contact was
already established; were they getting information they could use in the
future for some nefarious purpose? It's hard to say.
Right, it is an old one, but I guess it is possible to use numbers in
other area codes to do that kind of thing...
