I think there are other reasons, like ego, like knowing that many
Republicans will lose votes if he stops the war, like other ways of
enriching wealthy supporters. I'm sure there is a long list, but I won't
be putting "don't want to lose to the terrorists" on that list.
If we lose our chutzpah in the middle east, America is done as a major
power in the world, and the Islamic fundamentalists will gradually
annihilate any country that they can't absorb (much like they've begun
to do in the EU). Without at least some reasonable fear of the "crazy
Americans", we lose all bargaining power at the oil table, and since no
one wants to belly up with decent alternatives, our economy becomes, at
the very least, imperiled.
So you think we should kill people and act crazy so that we can get
cheaper oil? First, I have no reason to believe it works that way.
Second, I think that would be wrong. Third, there are many negative
consequences of doing such a foolish thing and those might outweigh any
gains made in oil prices.
