Exactly, as in "why should I be the one who puts aside his normal life to rid the world of corruption?" and "I voted for the other guy, so don't blame me." How about "you have to choose your battles" (as if they have done so). Another great excuse for inertia is "I didn't know" -- that was the Germans' favorite after the war.


I have to say, you will definitely do better for yourself if you put 100% of your focus on doing better for yourself. On the other hand, I don't think it is true that "nice guys finish last." If you are passionate about an issue, and you work hard to promote it, people will come to your side and help you. You don't have to be rich to be successful.
