I really do think that this kind of discussion is at the same level as following the Anna Nicole-Smith media event.

So over the weekend Ann Coulter makes a joke comparing Edwards to a faggot. Immediately Howard Dean makes a big media event over this. One of the things he said was that the American public wants a well-reasoned debate. But that is simply not true! The American public wants their politics to be like a TV reality show, or "American Idol." They love it when Coulter makes stupid remarks like this, and they love it when Dean rises to the bate. They love it when O'Reilly accuses Boxer of making anti-troop statements, and they love it when the other side accuses O'Reilly of getting the facts wrong viz a viz Boxer's remarks.

But really, who cares? Or rather (because, yes, everyone does care), why should anyone care?

They shouldn't care much. In a perfect world, no one would know who Ann Coulter is. We have a huge problem when a major concern of our voters is what will happen with "gay rights". We have much bigger problems than that. Did anyone see 60 Minutes last night? Check this out:

There's some news that matters. It's finally getting some coverage -- it's on 60 Minutes -- but is it on Fox News?

But I'm sorry. But this isn't a Fox News versus the rest of the media issue. And it isn't a right versus left issue. It's that nobody, nobody, nobody covers the issues properly. I few months ago I had the issue of UN Resolution 1559 getting no coverage until it was too late. Now, over the weekend, from you, I find that the New York Times had a majorly misleading story about the global warming issue. Now you give me a web page about how Medicare might be going bankcrupt. But how do I know that this story isn't missing some major, major detail? And if they did miss out this huge detail, I can have no reassurance that any other media outlet will hold them accountable for this. Give me one media outlet, anything, be it left wing, right wing - I don't care, but a media outlet that reliably and accurately prints the news, and I will stick to that outlet like a glove.

And also, "gay rights" is an issue. But again, the problem is not whether it is reported or whether it is not reported, but how it is reported. Ann Coulter's remarks are about irrevelant to the issue as when Michael Richards made those racist remarks - sure it is a bad thing, but its a drop in the ocean and certainly not worth broad media coverage.
