her parathyroids removed at the Mark O. Hatfield Clinical Research Center.
She didn't have health insurance so she found an NIH research project that
did it for her for free! It's only about a 20 minute procedure, but they
did a bunch of additional tests and measures and kept her there for a few
days. My mom mentioned that she might not be able to get to the hospital
from her hotel to visit my sister today because of the ice storm -- she
thought the buses might not run.
