Thank you both for the ideas. I went with Jon's first since it didn't
involve the chance of me permanently locking the screws in place.
Disclaimer: if you'd destroyed or shattered your notebook by using my
idea, I would not have been responsible. But, given that it worked, I
am happy to bask in the glory. :-) It did work for me in the past
however. I only tried this after I reasoned about how these notebooks
were put together, and the fact that there didn't seem to be any
pieces that could (say) bend in the middle if you really leaned over
it hard.
It worked like a charm. I thought I had pressed too hard earlier, but
nothing like being on the verge of snapping the handle off the
screwdriver.
So how would you describe that sound? :-)
Now if I can just get the Apple Store to sell me
replacement screws at a decent price. And if anyone wants a 256 MB
PC2700 DIMM for their Powerbook, let me know.
As for replacement screws...I'm not so sure I'd go to the Apple store
for them. I might try a high-end hobby store, or somebody who does a
lot of notebook repairs. Let me get back to you on the PC2700 DIMM.
