Indeed. People are generally quite willing to accept what they think
is a sincere apology, and cover-ups and the like almost always do more
damage than they save. Clinton's "I didn't inhale" was clearly a case
of him trying way too hard to make what he did seem less important or
wrong. And that almost never works, even if you're Bill Clinton.

Or maybe Clinton's "I didn't inhale" was meant to be a stab at
self-depreciating humor, and none of us got the joke. (If so, it does
raise my opinion of Clinton, although just a tiny bit.)
Talking about self-depreciating humor, that is one of Bush's qualities
that I really enjoy. For example, "Some people think I swagger a lot,
but in Texas we just call it 'walking!'"
