As far as name recognition goes, I remember a guy who was running for
president in the mid-70s whose biggest claim to fame was that he was a
peanut farmer and the former governor of Georgia. People learned his
name just fine. I remember another guy who was the governor of a
smaller southern state whose claim to fame was giving a pretty bad
speech at a convention in 1988. It didn't end up being a problem.

But in both of those cases, you had people with a proven track record of leadership, whether good or bad, they were politicians and they new the sacrifice and how to do the job. In fact, it could be argued that a Governor has a much better shot than being President than any senator since senators are not called upon to provide the same type of leadership as a governor.

IN the case of Clinton, he was a governor for 12 years prior to making a presidential run, and Carter had been a State Senator for four years and a governor for four years.

I would agree though that name recognition is not likely to be as huge an issue as others thing it will, but it is still one of the issues he has to overcome. More importantly though, he has to convince the voters that he has the knowledge and ability to lead a nation. A two term state senator and so far half term US Senator might have some issues there.

I will say, of the two top running choices for President on the democrat side, I like Obama more than I like Hilary.

I have been on the side of Biden for a long time, but I have to say, he has done some things recently that tell me that my early impressions of the man are not going to hold up.

Obama has approximately ten thousand times the name recognition these
guys had a year before they ran for president. In addition, he has
pretty formidable public speaking skills. To be honest, I don't know
if this is enough for him to win the nomination or the presidency, but
name recognition is not going to be his big problem.

As far as his geographical situation and his (mixed) race and how
these will play in the south...I imagine it won't help him that much
in the general election. I think in some states it could help him a
lot in the primaries. I think if he did win the nomination, the
obvious choice for him to make for VP would be a former general who
was a southerner, and Wesley Clark would be one obvious choice.

But let the historical record show that I have *always* been
unimpressed with Joe Biden. I find it really hard to think of one
thing that I strongly believe in that he has really taken the lead in
promoting. He's not the worst senator in the world by a long-shot, but
I really don't know why anybody has ever thought of him as a serious
presidential candidate.
