Both items can be simply remedied by a press release where he announces
that he will now be known as Barak "Bubba" Obama. It worked for George.

As far as name recognition goes, I remember a guy who was running for president in the mid-70s whose biggest claim to fame was that he was a peanut farmer and the former governor of Georgia. People learned his name just fine. I remember another guy who was the governor of a smaller southern state whose claim to fame was giving a pretty bad speech at a convention in 1988. It didn't end up being a problem.

Obama has approximately ten thousand times the name recognition these
guys had a year before they ran for president. In addition, he has
pretty formidable public speaking skills. To be honest, I don't know
if this is enough for him to win the nomination or the presidency, but
name recognition is not going to be his big problem.

As far as his geographical situation and his (mixed) race and how
these will play in the south...I imagine it won't help him that much
in the general election. I think in some states it could help him a
lot in the primaries. I think if he did win the nomination, the
obvious choice for him to make for VP would be a former general who
was a southerner, and Wesley Clark would be one obvious choice.

But let the historical record show that I have *always* been
unimpressed with Joe Biden. I find it really hard to think of one
thing that I strongly believe in that he has really taken the lead in
promoting. He's not the worst senator in the world by a long-shot, but
I really don't know why anybody has ever thought of him as a serious
presidential candidate.
