The biggest problem with pushing independent music is making the music good. I related to this in my previous post. Music has to be written well, have good musicianship, influence, recording and production to make an impact. Of course, there is also the problem getting your music pushed to the point of getting people to download it. That is probably the biggest issue as it takes a lot of money to market a product.

I went to a site a few years ago that had a list of the most downloaded
MP3s or somesuch -- the idea was to show us what was most liked out of a
large collection of freely-available recordings. Anyway, the #1 song was
still not good. I wouldn't listen to it twice.
I do think there is a future for free-distribution of music in digital
format. It should be a great way to get started. Word-of-mouth (or
keyboard?) can do an awful lot for you these days.
I'll look at the sites Vern recommended.
