The wife and I argue about this one too (her degree's in economics), but
she has actually told me that she can't explain the why of it to me...
I do know that I was a much larger fan of the flat tax when it simply
excluded WIC-list type items (primarily, food) rather than the weird
prebate concept I heard discussed on the radio the other night. It seems
a bad idea to funnel money into a government run entity with the intent
of redistributing it back out.

Two words.... Flat Tax.
Two more words: Bad Idea. I don't have time at this moment to back
this up with an argument, but you don't make any argument for it
yourself, so there you go.
Also, I have no idea what this has to do with the topic that was being
discussed unless you want to point out that tax deductions can be
abused, especially by wealthier people. But that's an argument for
fewer deductions (and I am completely with you there) rather than a
flat tax rate, per se.
