The guy almost certainly didn't know that Stephen is a math prof.  He
probably found one of Stephen's computing projects (e.g., screen saver, or
distributed computing) and wrote to him because of those things.

Once upon a time in the late 90s, I was essentially offered a $75K per year job in Silicon Valley via email from a recruiter who admitted he only contacted me because I had previously posted answers on the comp.lang.perl newsgroup.

Now, the really troubling thing is that it's not clear that was the
worst recruitment strategy available. Neither is cold-calling Stephen
Montgomery-Smith, for that matter; you should just be doing it for the
right reason.
