Interesting possibility. Stephen -- where did the message originate? Did it come from a google address, or elsewhere, or was it spoofed? If you can show us some of the header, that would help.



In any case, I would hold off on applying until Google advertises openings requiring expertise in vector-valued function spaces or measure theory or the Navier-Stokes equation. Those are the people who get paid the big bucks. :-)

I find it easy to believe that Google could use some high-powered mathematicians like Stephen, but I don't know exactly how. The reason I don't think the email was legit was that the guy didn't seem to know anything about Stephen except for his email address and first name and probably that Stephen was good with computers (maybe because of the screen saver Stephen made).
