Though I believe the laws have been amended since, when I donated my
car to the Salavation Army in 2002 they told me I could set the value
for the donation. Since I don't itemize deductions, it didn't really
matter but I thought it was kind of funny I could value a 1988 Cougar
with no rear differential at $10,000 or $15,000 and they didn't really
care.

I think they changed that part of the law a couple of years ago; you can see how it could be abused otherwise. So they might clamp down on me and tell me I can't deduct more than $1K or whatever. I presume all the charities do then is auction these off to dealers and yards.

Your Cougar without a rear differential sounds like a truly remarkable car. :-)
