When there is incentive to be the guy that closes the big deal, captures
the bad guy, or any number of other instance, you will have this type of
thing.
I think we need to recognize that our leaders are not superhumans
deserving of adulation. They are not selfless heros. They should be
treated with great skepticism and we should recognize that they are
leading us because they are overwhelmed by a desire for power and not
because they want to help us. Design governments and businesses and other
social systems with this principle in mind and you will do much better.
Of course, it's hard to get there from here because the big men in charge
like things just the way they are.
