All we ever know is what a person does and says. Collins said that he became a Christian after he didn't know what to say to a dying patient who asked him if he believed in Jesus -- he was an atheist at the time. I think a good answer would be "no," or "I think religion is a private matter" or "I can tell that your religion gives you a lot of hope and strength," or whatever, but you don't have to change your religion to fit in with the people around you (unless you are Francis Collins).

I usually just said Jesus was a good man, which i believe. I believe he
was a man, and a good man. and he was just turned into this GOD like
stature or "Son of God" by the people around him. *shrug* I have had
patients ask me similar type questions and I usually try to get an
answer that wouldn't upset them and still try to be honest to myself. I
don't turn my beliefs around because patients asked me those
questions... IF that were the case, I'd be hard core christian, jewish
AND Jahova's witness ;) hahahahah.

Yes, but my point was not that to react the way Collins did is the necessary or correct reaction, rather that it is a reasonable reaction.

But to go back to your "good man" point, this is the view of many people. However Collins (and here he is quoting C.S. Lewis' "Mere Christianity") directly answers this question.

I am also with mike on the issue of people using their religion to get
ahead. You see that with Politics a lot.

Yes, I don't deny it. But that doesn't mean that everyone who is in politics, and who claims to have religion, is doing so necessarily because they want to manipulate people.

I think we need a Jewish woman
President! She'll guilt american into getting itself back into shape ;)
hahaha. (I know, bad joke! I thought it was kind of funny...)

Is this what Golda Meir did for Israel? :-)
