Well that is the slippery slope we are headed down. When did it all start? Who knows, but we are at a point now that the absurd is the norm. I admit that when I first read Kerry's comments, I was a little shocked that he would say that. After I got a little more information, my shock went away, but then was replaced with awe in how utterly stupid Kerry really is. He should have known, and BEEN better than to make such a low-blow shot on anyone, much less the president. Of course I was no longer shocked though because that is all the democrats know how to do. They offer up criticisms, but no real plans about how they are going to be different, other than to say they are different.
Kerry did little better with his apology. I heard on the radio today him saying some statement to the effect of "If anyone thinks a decorated war veteran would go out and insult our troops, you would have to be crazy" Well the truth is that Mr. Kerry has done exactly that on more than one occasion. Remember, he denounced his country and the military and essentially spit in the face of every man who served in Vietnam with some of his stunts when he came back. His statement today, well maybe it was directed at Bush, but it would not have been uncharacteristic if he had actually meant the military.
Either way, his blunder had the effect of sending him back to Washington with his tail between his legs. It really is too bad that the only thing he and the democrats have to offer up is that they are not the republicans. Eventually that tactic might play out, but I really doubt, even despite the polling data that it is going to work for them this year again.

Well, if you watched him, it did not look like he was trying to tell a joke. He delivered it all with a straight face and tone, leading a lot of people to believe that's what he meant to say. When it didn't have the effect he intended, then he said that it was a botched joke. I can't tell if Kerry is telling the truth or not if it really was a bothched joke, but he just dissed on every person in the armed forces whether he meant to or not. I find it hard to believe that hundreds of thousands of soldiers and their families shrug it off as "not important."
Sometimes comments that are made that are not even botched but simply misinterpreted can lead to people getting in lots of trouble. If you remember Trent Lott being forced to resign over saying at Strom Thurmond's 100th birthday party that his state was proud of having Thurmond represent it and that Thurmond would have been a good president. Lott meant that Thurmond was a good leader and his views on national defense were right, but the media interpreted it as racism as Thurmond ran as a Dixiecrat in the 1940s. Of course Lott offered a lot of apologies and clarifications, but he lost his position and career because of it in spite of the apologies and whatnot. If that was a big deal, then I can't possibly see how Kerry's explicit comment isn't one too. I'm not calling for Kerry's ouster, only to have people think about how they react to comments like this and make it have some modicum of logic as to how the people that say them are treated. To quote Spock, the current system is just not logical.
