What happens this year does not really mean nuch in the bigger picture.
However there is evidence to suggest that we are in a general cooling
period in Earth's history, as part of a cycle of warming and cooling
that appears to occur over the course of millenia. However there is
also evidence showing that we are counteracting the effects of the
cooling phase by engaging in activities such as burning fossil fuels
that emit gases which enhance the atmosphere's ability to retain heat
from the Sun. Basically it could be said that we are stirring the pot
by mixing warming and cooling. And this is what is leading to erratic
climactic conditions and pheonomena which, observed only in the course
of a single human lifetime, seem contradictory to the idea of an overall
warming effect as a result of the abovementioned emissions.
The Earth has warmed considerably in recent years. If this is happening
despite a long term cooling trend (which I doubt), then it is even more
problematic. I haven't heard anything about "erratic climactic
conditions" that "seem contradictory." Where are you getting that?
