You keep harping on the fact that we only believe religion because it
makes us feel good and we 'want' it. So be it. You'll hate it, but I
feel sorry for you sometimes. I would HATE to be you and hate the world
you idealize. You suck the very marrow out of life and replace it with
ash and sawdust.
You decry the lack of 'progress', and I think that trying to fit others
square pegs into your round hole definition of progress is ridiculous.
For you, progress would be the entire race becoming hyper-intelligent
automatons like yourself, utterly lacking in heart.
Religion seems to exist and be perpetuated because of social reasons, not
because people have a craving for religion. The stuff Christian wrote
above is an important part of the picture: hostile rejection of the
nonbeliever. If you don't believe like him, you are a robot without a
heart. Religion has been promoted partly by the slaughtering of
nonbelievers. Christianity certainly worked that way. Just look at the
Crusades, the burning of 'heretics' at the stake, etc.
Regarding art and music -- take a look around you! Many artists and
musicians today are "Bohemian" types who are not very religious. If
anything, Christianity crushes the creative spirit and makes people into
robot followers. There is just no chance that a study of artists or
musicians will find that they are more likely to be Christians than are
randomly selected people.
