kept us pinned down for a decade or two they found the things flooded

fuel they used had not been kept from destroying the installations. In
short, very few if any of their birds could have even approached the US.
Which makes you wonder why we were concerned for so many years about the
missile gap and competing with them. They were not even close to us, but
fear helps to sell bombs and somebody had bombs for sale.
