I just want to say that gmail is way faster now than it used to be,
which is great.
I also have to say that I installed Google Desktop on my Windows PC in
my office and was very pleasantly surprised by its feature richness.
It can simultaneously search my PC, my Gmail and the web. In fact, if
I hit Ctrl-Ctrl (twice in succession) a search window pops up. If I
enter a term, it searches the PC, Gmail and the web and presents the
results in my browser.
The speed of Google Desktop is such that I once started a Windows
search for a filename, got sick of waiting after about 5 minutes,
remembered I had Google Desktop installed, started the search and had
the file in literally a blink of an eye after entering the search
term. It is very fast.
I'm curious... any idea what kind of overhead cost for keeping a
real-time index like this? I think MacOS used to do this, but I think
they've tooled it back a bit in recent times.
They also have a bunch of little tidbits like a clock and an MP3
player that look cool. I might not use them, but they have a nice
look to them -- kinda Applish.
Any similarity between this and MacOS 10.4+ desktop widgets? I'd really
like to see something similar for PC.
