I take a 3-tier approach.  My first line of defense is my firewall/virus protection software.  I've been using ZoneAlarm Pro for about 3 years now, and while I've had it block thousands of intrusion attempts, I've only found 3 viruses.  Secondly, I use Spybot S&D.  This is totally free, has a very user-friendly interface, and updates very frequently.  My last line of defense is Windows Defender (formerly Microsoft Anti-Spyware), which you can download for free from Microsoft.  I've never found anything with this software, because I think anything that does make it on my computer gets wiped away by the previous two before MD has a chance to scan.  I schedule each to run an hour apart (ZoneAlarm virus scan, Spybot spyware scan, and MD scan) every day starting at 4:00 am.  This watch-my-back's-back's-back approach has prevented me from being infected with ANYTHING for three years.

NOTE:  ZoneAlarm Pro is not free, so if you already have a firewall/anti-virus solution, stick with it...the other two are completely free.

Adaware seems to do pretty well, but I'm guessing that you could find
systems so infested that your best practice might still be a winner.
