So I'm not really a soccer/football fan at all, but I was surprised to
see France's great player (Zidane) take his team out of contention for
the World Cup with a truly pointless head butt against the Italian
Materazzi.
My impression was that Zidane's action had very little effect on the
final outcome. This came in the last few minutes of extra time. Both
teams were very tired, and no-one was going to score. It came down to
penalty kicks, so Zidane's absence was nullified. As far as I am
concerned, when it comes down to penalty kicks, both teams have proved
themselves worthy adversaries, and they may as well do it by coin toss.
With players this good, whether you get a penalty kick or not is more
luck than anything else.
There's a lot of luck in the game. One French penalty kick missed by a
fraction of an inch (bounced off the crossbar almost straight down).
