VMS is definitely old and proprietary and could maybe be considered niche, but is hardly obsolete.

It depends on what you mean by "obsolete." Compare it to Linux in terms of available software programs. Yes, it's a problem for me that VMS doesn't run anything I want to run.


I actually had someone from HP tell me quite arrogantly, "If you want R to run on OpenVMS, why don't you just port R to OpenVMS yourself?" And quit my day job? I don't think so.
