On a related note, can any of you hear the high pitched whine that
CRT-style TVs make? Especially the older big models. I've been able to
hear those all my life. It's kind of like this teenbuzz, but maybe a
little higher Hz, and being right behind some TVs could be almost
"deafening". I remember riding my bike around town when I was younger
when people used to leave their windows and doors open, and could hear
that tone from some tv sets.

I don't hear it so much anymore.

US TVs have 525 lines, scanned 30 times a second = 15750 Hz.

I've tested my hearing before, using a piezo tweeter and a test
oscillator. I can make it to about 16 kHz. I haven't tested
recently.

Does anyone know if you play a frequency you can't hear, say 18kHz,
and you put your ear next to the speaker, if that can cause hearing
damage? I know high frequencies are worse than low for causing
damage, but the damage is in the nerves, rather than the physical
acoustics of the ear.
