My sense is that the population isn't that good at choosing its leader.
A democracy is a good system only in that it seems better than all the
others. But I don't see a big problem in having a system that only
approximates the person that the majority want.
So as far as I am concerned, it is the "unintended consequences" of one
system over another that can make it good or bad. Electoral colleges
have certain problems, but I'm sure that the popular vote would have
other problems.
In any case, I'm not going to fight hard to keep the electoral college,
nor am I going to fight hard to get rid of it.
