George HW Bush also promised "No new taxes!" but he had to raise them.
He probably knew when he made the promise that he would have to break it,
but the thing is, you can't win an election running on a tax-increase
platform. People want to believe that their favored candidate can somehow
magically make everything alright for free.
And in true outstanding leadership form, he accepted that he broke his
promise and it cost him in the end.

I think so, but remember that 29% of Americans is about 84 million people
who still approve of Bush. Those people, I think, are like Bush in that
they will never change their minds. This is the issue that I've been
writing about and that seems to be "insulting" some of the religious
conservatives on this list.
The thing is, you guys can't have it both ways: You can't be a
religiously-motivated 100% unwaivering Bush supporter, and convince me
that you are listening to evidence with an open mind. It's not going to
happen. So you can pretend that you have your doubts about religion, or
Bush, or whatever, but I'm not seeing them. It isn't convincing me.
The fact is Mike, us conservatives on the list are more open minded
than you. When presented with contadictory evidence you dismiss it, in
support of whatever you happen to believe in. How are you any
different than the rest of us?
Its easy supporting a democratic position these days, you really don't
have to offer up anything constructive or in many cases any real
evidence to support the position. It is easy to blame it on the
Christian right, and call them a bunch of wackos, much easier than
coming up with a plan and standing behind it.
