I don't disagree Mike, we are and have been saying the same thing. This issue is what is going to put the democrats back in power this fall. Not because the democrats have any sort of plan to speak of, but because the mainstream republican voter base is up in arms over illegal immigration.

The Democrat plan is to avoid presenting a plan that can be criticized. There is the McCain-Kennedy bill, but I guess the Republican leadership doesn't like it. Is that what's going on?

Meanwhile, the Republicans tear themselves apart because many Republican supporters (with money) hire illegal immigrants and many Republican voters hate illegal immigrants (or at least want them to obey the law). So what should the Republicans do? I would recommend tougher laws and weaker enforcement: Tough talk and no action. That's a good way to make both sides happy if you can fool the anti-illegal-immigrant crowd.

A possible disaster: Deciding to build a fence all along the Mexican border. This appeals to many people but I believe it will not work. It will be very expensive, which is why the border states want to do it -- they want the federal money to poor into the state to hire local people ot do the work. In other words, California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas are happy to take our federal tax dollars and waste them on local projects.

When you have 92% of conservative voters in a, albiet unscientific, poll saying the leaders in Washington should go &*$# themselves, it is not going down well.

This is one time where the democrats with no stance and no plan are actually going to reap the rewards. The republican have a plan, but their voter base is not happy with that plan.

At election time: Better no plan than an unpopular plan.
