I think this person nails it.

The writer assumes that people in other nations know our immigration law. I don't know it and I don't think they know it either. They know what happens to other people who come here -- they make tons of money. They feel that the US wants them to come and work here. They know that they are supposed to have a visa, but they know that there are millions of people working here with expired visas, or who never had a visa.

The problem with US policy is that enforcement is completely haphazard. The other problem with US immigration policy is that no one seems to know what the written rules really are.

The writer says *nothing* about the work these "illegals" are doing. But they are only here to work. We do nothing to stop them from working here. We don't check IRS records against INS records. This sends a clear message -- "we want you to work here." So they come because we want them.

This was in the article:

When the Denver Post, in 2002, took up the cause of Jesus Apodaca, an
illegal alien in Denver denied in-state tuition to the University of
Colorado, Congressman Tom Tancredo was the only public official who
suggested that deportation might be more appropriate. ICE stayed mum.

You'd think the guy just walked across the border yesterday. In fact he was here for 5 years, but if he had been here for 18 years it would have been the same. I agree with Rep. Tom Tancredo when he wrote this about the case:

"The message this sends is that you can be so brazen as to not have the
slightest concern about going on the front page of The Denver Post and
telling everybody that you are here illegally ... It's turning the law
on its head. It's making a mockery of justice. ... It is a very bad
idea to reward people for breaking your law.

The fact is, we seem to have a policy of nonenforcement. I'm fine with deporting people, but I want a policy and I want it to be followed consistently. Why don't we have that already?

My theory is that the government wants illegal workers to come here and work for low wages because it helps the economy and the influential people who hire illegal aliens. Those of you who think that we got into this situation because bleeding-heart liberals want to help the poor Mexican people couldn't be more wrong. It has everything to do with economics and nothing to do with liberal sentiment. You have a Republican President, a Republican Senate and Republican House and illegal immigration has grown massively under their watch. That's because they want it this way.

Mike
