nonsense. I can 'cmd' and use 'cd progra~1' all the time. In fact... I
still do it all the time.
[Note, I'm XPSP2 when I run these tests]
if you use 'cmd' 8 character pathnames such as 'cd progra~1' as
well as longer pathnames 'cd program files' work...I didn't say that the
8 character pathnames wouldn't work.
but....
if you use 'command' only the 8 character pathnames seem to work.

You can use this shortcut from the start->run prompt to... Until that prompt
started filling in recently used queries, I would always use 'progra~1' and
whatever the shortcut was for 'documents and settings' (didn't use that one
as much). Mydocu~1 too.
Not much point since you can type 'desktop' or 'my documents' at the
start->run as aliases now.

In windoze, if you goto start-->run and type the following in...
"cmd.exe" you can "cd" to full pathnames ie. "program files"
whereas
"command.exe" is only 8 character pathnames...ie. "progra~1"
so it probably depends which Windoze "DOS" you use.

Thanks. I'll try that. I'll try some tests at some point to see how I'm
supposed to handle this stuff most effectively.
It is interesting that I could not delete the file from a Cygwin RXVT
terminal, but I could delete it from Command Prompt. More research is
needed!
