I'm browsing through deleting old mail and saw this, but don't see if
someone suggested a solution.
I have this problem all the time as I like very verbose informative
filenames for mp3s.
One thing to keep in mind, it's not just the filename, it's also the
path name.
If you move the file to a location closer to root you can often change
it that way.
Also, you can rename the directories it's in to shorten that path.
If all else fails, you can usually use an ftp program to manipulate things.

CDex wrote the file with 124 characters in the filename. Windows won't
let me change the name -- if I click on the filename, it just beeps.
Same if I hit F2. In Cygwin, the mv command says "cannot stat
[filename] File name too long." (replace [filename] with the actual
filename). It will report the entire filename, but it won't let me
change the name!
I don't know what the Windows limit is on filename lengths, but I find
it surprising that the OS will allow a program to make a filename that
is too long, but it won't allow me to shorten the filename.
The file is essentially dead because the system will not let me do
anything with it! I can't open it, rename it, copy it, scp it. So now
I'm going to delete it and recreate it with a different name.
How weird is that?
This is the filename, by the way:
12 - H.Alden, Stripling, Peplowski, Helleny, Hyman, Friesen, Sommer _ It
Don't Mean A Thing If It Ain't Got That Swing.mp3
It's from "Sweet and Lowdown - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack."
