Proposed Federal Bioterror Lab Worries Columbia Neighbors
COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) -- A proposal to build a federal bioterrorism research
center near Columbia has neighbors worried about accidental exposure to
substances like anthrax.
A consortium led by the University of Missouri wants to build a $400
million National Bio- and Agro-Defense Facility for the Department of
Homeland Security.
The center would replace the aging Plum Island Animal Disease Center,
located off New York's Long Island. Scientists are ferried to the center
from the mainland, to study foot-and-mouth disease, anthrax and other
substances the government fears could be used as weapons.
The University of Missouri's preferred site for the lab is its South Farm
complex, just outside Columbia. Neighbors point out the proximity to an
elementary school and a retirement home.
Lisa Patterson is one of those neighbors. The mother of three points out
the New York center is isolated by the ocean. She says security would be
high, but mistakes can happen.
