Sure, you can beam power, but as you said you wouldn't want to stand in a 
power beam.  We are talking about line of sight transmission, right?  It 
cannot go through walls or through anything else.  Think of it as a 
high-energy laser beam -- now where can you realistically beam to?

I'm sure that something more than metering stopped Tesla's plan.  Other 
problems would include accidental fires, fried birds, etc.
