I added a gig of ram to my laptop recently and it only cost about $100.
Offhand I don't remember the memory type but it was just a normal SODIMM
of some kind or another. Will upgrade it another gig soon since it has 2
slots for memory. My gawd it was such a pain to upgrade the memory in
this cheapie Averatec because online FAQ had the entirely wrong location
for the memory and told me to take off the bottom when really I needed
to remove the keyboard and some other parts to upgrade the memory. I
threw the old chip into a friend's even cheaper Dell as a gift and the
Dell was so much easier. It only had the one slot available but you
could access it by removing one screw on the bottom to open a little
panel. I guess the point of this rant is.. does your laptop not take the
1GB SODIMM's?
Well, that didn't take long. The machine runs great, modulo the usual
tweaks one has to make. One thing it could clearly use is some more
RAM. Tragically, I believe this thinkpad takes 144-pin SODIMMs and
has a free slot for only 1, so I think the most DRAM I can get into
the thing is 320 MB, which would be up from 192 MB I have now. Does
anybody know enough about Ubuntu and its memory footprint to tell me
whether the speed-up is worth the ~$70 for the 256 MB DIMM?
