There are hubs and there are hubs. When TWA (and then American) had a
ton of flights coming out of St. Louis, it was really a hub.
Recently, however, they have substantially cut down on the number of
flights going out of STL. KC might have "international" in its name,
but it's not nearly as big a hub as (say) Chicago. Your best
selection of flights to most places is out of a major hub.
This isn't necessarily a small thing; the last two times I've had to
fly to DC, it's literally taken all day to do so because ticket prices
from STL are uncompetitive with MCI to either Reagan National or BWI.
So you need to schlep off to KC, then catch a (usually two-part)
flight to DC from there.
