Also consider that Apple has full access to the true Intel compiler with all the optimizations they could ever desire... Just think of your standard out of the box i386 2.6 vanilla Linux kernel on a Pentium 4 vs a recompiled 2.6 kernel with the cruft trimmed away optimized for that Pentium 4. Hands down much faster... Also the Apple optimized kernel has a very limited, and very well designed set of closed hardware that it has to deal with, forget the options of i386 support or Via and SiS chip sets.

The "Core duo" Intel version is allegedly 4-5x faster than the Mini or things like SPECfp. And that makes sense; this is the new Intel notebook chip set and it evidently is quite a bit faster than the last generation, especially the dual core version which had no equivalent before. But there are other changes too, notably the speed of the front side bus and I think the amount of cache.
