Hybrids are good as they allow each mechanical component to operate
within their peak effciency range.
Interestingly, transportation accounts for only 14% of greenhouse gas
emissions. A not insignificant number, but not the highest:

IIRC, cement production is the majority of industrial process greenhouse
gas emissions.
Automobiles are a great place to cut greenhouse gas emissions, and an
even better place to cut dependency on foreign energy sources, but
they're not the only place to drive efficiency.
